Chiavari was created in 1807 by the carpenter Chiavari Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who at the invitation of the Marquis Stefano Rivarola, reworked some French chairs models related to the Empire style, simplifying the decoration and reducing sections of structural elements.
The chair was a success and soon many manufacturers were born in Chiavari and the surrounding towns: to Gaetano Descalzi death in 1855, there were about 600 workers employed in the sector. The Chiavarina was praised by Carlo Alberto of Savoy, Napoleon III and the sculptor Antonio Canova.
