Monochrome Chinese Fish Scale cloisonne is long famed for it’s high quality of craftsmanship and understated elegance. A staple of interior design from the 1920’s and into the 1950’s the cigarette and tobacco related tabletop items are a quintessential reminder that living one’s best life one hundred years ago required accoutrements that are equally beautiful and functional today. The integration of Chinioiserie into Western design has origins many centuries earlier, but many a Hollywood Regency interior included small collections… of Fish Scale tobacco jars, small boxes, ashtrays and desk accessories. If you haven’t started your Fish Scale collection yet, today is a fine day to start. The midnight blue enamel examples are uncommon to find on the market. Please note that this has been gently cleaned, but were one desirous of a shinier and more consistent surface, you may polish away patina and evidence of age and use until it looks bright shiny and almost new.
