This Chinese export rose mandarin punch bowl was hand painted in the first half of the 19th century with overglaze enamels of pink, green, blue, yellow and finely highlighted with gold work and intricate borders. The bold top border is of flowers, fruits and butterflies on a gold ground. The outside decoration is a continuous scene (hence rose mandarin rather than rose medallion which would have had multiple scenes). This bowl is a transitional bowl in that the exterior has one huge wrap around scene, while the interior has five scenes of daily life enclosed by gold work borders. The central scene is of musicians entertaining in a garden. Had this been a rose medallion bowl, there would have been multiple scenes enclosed by borders on the outside as well as the inside. This rose mandarin bowl show exquisite painting techniques and more vibrant colors than the later rose medallion bowls, which were often formulaic, circa 1840. Measures: 11 3/4 inch diameter x 5″ high. $2,850.
