Pair,
Circa 1745
Chinese Export porcelain armorial en grisaille services are unusual to find. This striking pair of soup plates are well painted in en grisaille only with no gold also. There is a large central coat of arms, of a British family, with a shield painted with a lion rampant holding a raised sword below a figure in armor, the whole enclosed at the top and sides with scrolling oak leaves.
The border is painted with eight alternating groupings of leaves or flowers. The inner border is a lattice pattern interspersed with four ovals of leafy scrolls.
