A nice antique Chinese serpentine / jade with hand painted porcelain hand mirror, circa 1910s to 1920s. The mirror is beautifully hand crafted from either serpentine (a stone often mistaken for jade) or jade itself (I am not an expert and honestly can not tell the difference on this piece) The yellowish-green handle supports a fine porcelain backing which has been hand-painted. The mirror is framed in ornate ormolu. The piece is in very good condition and measures 4″W x 9″H. #2164
Mirrors like this, as well as other vanity items, were popular with tourists who were just entering China for the first time. The opulent styling of the mirror reflects the western view of “exotic” China, known then as “the Orient.”
