Constructed in blue turquoise porcelain with gilt highlights, Algerian onyx and bronze, and comprising a gilt-bronze cased clock with an eight day movement, and delineating the hours in fac numerals painted on the porcelain face, set upon a gilt-bronze base over a caparisoned porcelain elephant, with gilt highlights and some polychrome, itself set on the onyx rectangular platform above a base designed in the Chinese manner; the matching twin light candelabra have Dogs of Fo clasping the candelabra arms in their jaws, seated on rounded plinths, with stylised elephant truck feet. . Their origin traced back to the Chinese Han Dynasty, the pair of creatures represent ‘ying’ and ‘yang’ and serve as guardians of an abode and those who dwell within.
